Matece Skow

Matece Skow, E-RYT500 has spent her career fostering compassionate growth and deep relaxation for students and clients. A bodyworker and yoga teacher for 15+ years, she is experienced in facilitating safe and nurturing environments for transformation of body and heart. She wanted to learn techniques to keep her body strong and flexible and she wanted to learn stretches that would help her clients improve their quality of life.

Originally from a small town in Iowa, she lived in Bloomington for 7 years in her early 20s, then the South San Francisco Bay Area for 8 years where she taught yoga, before returning once again to Bloomington.

Matece is E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance. Her first 200 hours of training were with Sivananda and her 500 hour training was with Mark Stephens. She has conducted many more hours of training with Maty Ezraty, Paul Grilley, Sarah Powers, Max Strom, Judith Lasater among others.

Matece teaches a wide range of yoga styles from Restorative and Yoga Nidra to Yin, Gentle and Vinyasa Flow. She also teaches workshops, leads retreats, and leads trainings on yoga and bodywork.

Although it is challenging to choose a favorite pose since they all serve different purposes, her favorite would be Sukhasana, Easy Pose. This is the seated pose she takes while in meditation, which is the foundation of all her personal yoga practice and teachings.

If someone walked into her class for the first time, Matece would say “Whatever has brought you in the door; you are in the right place. Yoga is a powerful tool for transformation, not only for your physical body, but for all parts of yourself. IT is a lot like a dance and so take it easy on yourself at first. Approach your practice with a beginner’s mind and don’t force the body to go where it doesn’t want to. Practice loving kindness with yourself in the beginning and always in your yoga practice.”

When asked what season Matece would be, she chose winter. She missed winter desperately when she lived in California. She loves the quiet of a winter snowfall, the necessity of getting cozy and warm and the stillness of the season.
